We all want to get through the airport quickly and easily when we travel to another country, but we also expect the authorities to keep the country’s borders secure. So how do countries address the challenge of delivering borders that are both safe and travel-efficient? In this talk, we find out about some of the features of passports that are used to verify identity and deter forgery and counterfeiting – and what security measures are being developed for the future.
The speaker, Frank Smith, spent his career in the UK Home Office in a wide variety of posts, including representing the UK on the EU committee for passport design and security. He has worked on front-line border control for Border Force, and also chaired the EU working group on the use of smartphones in law enforcement. Now retired, he currently writes guides on borders, biometrics and identity, and continues to work with international colleagues in the Secure Identity Alliance.
