Nowadays we tend to dismiss fables – short moral tales peopled by animals – as children’s stories. In fact, they are possibly some of the oldest literature in the world, still full of life and humour and wit, and a tonic for us all. Human nature never seems to change – or learn!
Our speaker, Isabel Raphael, started reading at the age of three, and has never stopped. Her aim in life has always been to pass on the glories of books – as a school teacher since 1960, a headmistress of Channing School (1984–98) and now with adult groups.
