Penshurst Place, our main stop of the day, was built in 1341 at a time when the defensive castle was evolving into the grand palace – but this is one which could still be defended, if necessary. It was held by Henry VIII from 1521 and passed in 1552 to the Sidney family, who still own the estate. The house was enlarged at this time and throughout the 16th century. By the early 19th century the house at Penshurst Place was falling into disrepair and major restoration works were carried out. The gardens too go right back to 1341 are of year-round interest. We will have a guided tour of the house. And you can get your lunch or a snack here.
Before arriving at Penshurst Place we will stop in the historic nearby town of Tonbridge (not Tunbridge Wells), which is noted for the variety of independent shops. There is also a chance to visit Tonbridge Castle, take a riverside walk by the side of the River Medway, or simply have a cup of coffee. The railway came to Tonbridge in 1842.
Please note, only members of a branch of the U3A may come on this outing.
