While Stalin and Hitler were killing millions in the 1940s, a small, shy Indian man was defying Churchill and ultimately relieved the British Empire of its crown jewel – India – without so much as picking up a stone. How did Gandhi do it? Why was Winston Churchill, so effective as a war leader, impotent to stop him? And what can we make of Gandhi’s legacy today?
In this illustrated talk, speaker Peter Popham will investigate these questions. Peter is a journalist and foreign correspondent who covered India and Pakistan for The Independent newspaper for five years. His novel India Be Damned is set in India during the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. Copies of the book will be on sale after the talk.
