Why are the works of works of two Victorians, WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, still so popular? In this talk, speaker Bernard Lockett reviews the world-wide popularity of Gilbert and Sullivan in the 21st century, and takes a look at the vast amount of social and political satire within the shows, together with their historical background and excerpts from some of the operas.
Bernard is a lifelong enthusiast of G&S with interests in the background, genre and satire within their works, and in their influence on musical theatre. He has been a trustee of the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival since 2010 and is also involved with the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company. He is the author of Here’s a State of Things, a historical novel featuring characters a century apart who become absorbed by the works and times of G&S and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company.
