Today, IT is hugely useful – and perhaps even too powerful. However, most of the inventions critical to the success of the computer came about for quite different purposes and pre-date the computer age – in some cases by thousands of years! The computer industry has refined these ideas to create a whole which is so much more than the sum of its parts.

Speaker Mike Klein is an engineer who studied at UCL, and from 1968 used the first computers at the university – the Atlas and later the IBM360 – for his research. Mike continued to use computers in his business and to keep up with the changes as they got smaller and smaller, and cleverer and cleverer!

Note: Mike Klein is kindly repeating this talk, first given at NLU3A in December 2022, as few people could attend then due to adverse weather conditions.
