There are many paintings that are made with the explicit purpose of making a political statement. Among the most famous in recent times is Guernica (1937) created by Picasso during the Spanish Civil War and in direct response to the Fascist bombing of the city. The talk will examine this and other paintings that sought to influence the way people thought or reacted to a particular event or political regime. In some cases, the paintings were specified by the patron, while others were instigated by the artist.
