In London’s Hyde Park on 1st May 1851, a spectacular international exhibition was opened by Queen Victoria. It was the first World Trade Fair. Its aims were to bring together works from all over world to display the great industrial achievements of mankind. It was intended above all to advance British industrial and trading interests.
The Great Exhibition of 1851 broke many records and lived on in the public imagination for decades. This talk, by Angela Cox, charts the story of the exhibition from its inception to its legacy.
