Samuel Pepys by John Hayls (1666)

Samuel Pepys lived in turbulent times – witnessing the restoration of the monarchy, the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. The lively and honest way in which he recorded the daily events of his life against the background of the wider political and social events of his day brings us very close to a man who lived in London over 350 years ago.

This talk by NLU3A members Angela and Peter Cox quotes from Pepys’s diary and is illustrated with contemporary portraits, paintings and prints. Angela was Head of Education at the National Portrait Gallery, and more recently has been a freelance lecturer in art history, including for the V&A Museum. Since retirement, Peter has written five non-fiction books on contemporary history.
