Almshouses were founded in England around 1000 years ago, and there are many wonderful surviving examples of almshouses in our local area, the London borough of Barnet. In this talk, Simon Smith will trace the long history of almshouses, highlighting examples in Barnet, north London, the UK and worldwide.
Simon has managed the historic Jesus Hospital Charity in Wood Street, Barnet for 15 years. He is an ambassador for the UK almshouse movement, aiming to raise the profile of this wonderful institution and also raise funds to prevent the loss of any small almshouse charities.
